Today, my husband while recovering from surgery, received a gift basket from his colleagues. What a nice surprise for him, that is, until we pulled from this basket (every item is glued to the next one with a glue-gun -how tacky in both senses!) a 3 3/4 oz. grocery store-type container of something named "Brie" (great!) that turns out to be an incredibly oily, thin and margarine-like substance further described on its packaging as "cheese flavoured spread". There was no Brie in this nor any other cheese, not even a taste of any type of cheese, Canadian or otherwise. It also distinctly lacked any texture of any cheese. (We're lacto-vegetarians who've cooked on several continents - we know all qualities and types of cheese, country by country.)

So, I went onto Cranberry Corners' website to see which gift basket this was because the item itself did not list its ingredients and I wanted to know what these were and how the company described this obvious non-accompaniment to wine. I found my husband's gift basket - it's the "Executive" basket priced at $96.00. Most prominent in the centre of the photo of this basket is a wheel of real French Camembert marked "des Vignobles". This wheel is one of the two major featured and pictured components of this wine/cheese/chocolate basket. Nowhere in the photo is there a container of US-produced and Mississauga-repackaged so-called "cheese-flavoured (ie. ersatz) spread".

It's disgusting that my husband's very kind colleagues got together and bought this basket to wish him a good recovery by sincerely acknowledging his love of wine and cheese only to then have "Cranberry Corners" blatantly use their knowledge and feelings to outrightly cheat them!

Imagine drinking the included good bottle of "Wolf Blass" Cabernet with this lip slathering oily and tasteless spread. We tried it on another fake in this basket - a box of water biscuits which was a fake of Carr's and again, completely tasteless. Ugh all around!

This exploitive and fraudulent substitution for Camembert takes outrageous advantage of people's sincere and warm feelings towards my husband, their wish that he receive what they knew he loves and that they cared to ensure that he would have to enjoy while he is not at work. Morever, at a time when he needs to recover, he has had unconscionably dumped on him now by Cranberry Corners the stressful choice of either lying to his friends about how good their Camembert was which would rightfully make them feel good; or alternatively, of telling them the truth and lead him to realize how his sudden illness was fraudulently abused by this company in order to transact this particular sale. No one who's ill, nor someone who is celebrating a happy event, should ever be put in such a dilemma just because a company wants to provide the inferior for a high price and hopes that Canadians won't notice the substitution. That insults all of us.

How did a local company that provides gift baskets to express people's feelings towards one anothers' lives so easily accept its lack of ethics and morality that it would do this to my husband and his friends? In a community, we are all neighbours who care to be good citizens whether we are selllers or buyers, no? Trust and respect are what make a society one. That, indeed, is why we all prefer to buy Canadian, not Chinese. Does Cranberry Corners even feel how it pulled away from us our main reason for supporting local business? I think not for it hasn't returned our phone calls on this matter. As a wife helping my husband to recover because he is a wonderful person and very important to me and many others, I am in tears over having to witness such a horrible degree of opportunism being taken by a business who I too might have innocently patronized one day on the innate understanding that it would want to provide me value for money spent.

We order corporate baskets for our customers all over the world and Patty at Cranberry Corners gave us the best service we have ever received. We ordered a wine basket and beer basket to be delivered in a rush to our customers in Ontario and they received the beautiful baskets very quickly. Patty and Cranberry Corners went above and beyond our expectations. We definitely recommend them for beautiful gift baskets. Thank you Patty!!
